I have always loved percussion, any kind of thing that can be hit, shaken, scraped or banged together to create unusual sounds. When record production works and the essential drum sounds are simplified to their essence then the addition of percussion adds the flavour and can define the groove. This love of percussion now means that on visiting a music shop I can browse the selection of toys thinking to myself ‘got one of those, already have that, don’t need another one of those…’ Until Wham! I see it: the thing I don’t have. Nowadays this would be something like a set of tablas, big taiko drums, timpani or a marimba because the next thought is ‘that’s expensive, can’t afford it…’
